Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics
SciLifeLab (https://www.scilifelab.se/ (https://www.scilifelab.se/)) is a national center for molecular biosciences focusing on research in health and the environment. The center combines leading technical expertise with advanced knowledge in translational medicine and molecular biosciences. SciLifeLab is a national resource operated by Karolinska Institute, KTH, Stockholm University, and Uppsala University. The center collaborates with several other educational institutions.
Administratively, the position will be placed at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Stockholm University. For more information about our activities, see our website: http://www.dbb.su.se/ (http://www.dbb.su.se/).
Project Description
The candidate will develop strategies for machine learning (ML), primarily focusing on interpretable ML and generative AI, to study complex biological processes. This project combines current analytical challenges with deeply rooted applications in life sciences. We are looking for a candidate with a PhD in either engineering/computer science/physics/mathematics. Experience in ML implementation (preferably interpretable ML and/or generative AI) is required.
The selected postdoc will join the laboratory Computational Microscopy for Cell Biology (CMCB) led by Dr. J. Griffié, which mainly consists of engineers, physicists, and mathematicians. The lab is based at SciLifeLab in Stockholm, a vibrant and dynamic science hub, with a particular focus on multidisciplinary research. The CMCB laboratory specifically aims to develop groundbreaking data/image analysis and modeling strategies to address fundamental biological questions using advanced light microscopy data. The laboratory's research scope ranges from reinforcement learning for drug design, interpretable ML pipelines for cancer research and diagnostics, to graphical neural networks for microscopy.
Responsibilities
The position involves actively participating in the daily research of the CMCB lab. The successful postdoc is expected to independently lead their research project while collaborating with team members on research projects that align with their qualifications and interests. Primarily, the selected candidate will design and implement new ML/statistical approaches dedicated to biological applications, mostly involving image/omics data.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the postdoctoral position, a PhD degree or a foreign degree assessed to be equivalent to a relevant PhD is required. The degree must be obtained by the time the employment decision is made.
Assessment Criteria
It is advantageous if the PhD or equivalent has been obtained no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, an earlier obtained degree may also be considered advantageous. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, trust assignments within trade unions, service in total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or relevant service/assignments in the subject area.
In the appointment process, special emphasis will be placed on scientific competence, and particular attention will be given to research expertise in data analysis/processing. Expertise in ML implementation, ideally interpretable ML and/or generative AI, is required. An application to bioinformatics is a plus.
About the Position
The position is full-time and is permanent, but at least two years and up to three years, with the possibility of extension if there are special reasons. Start date by agreement.
